International Workshop on Quantum Materials at Extremes Successfully Held

Oct 17, 2024

On October 15-16, 2024, the International Workshop on Quantum Materials at Extremes was successfully held at the Huairou Campus of the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). This workshop was organized by the Sino-Foreign Joint Research Unit at the CAS Institute Level, namely the "Joint Research Center for Quantum Materials and Physics under Extreme Conditions," jointly undertaken by the Institute of Physics, CAS, and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (MPICPS), Germany. The workshop invited experts and scholars from MPICPS, Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW Dresden), Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), the High Field Laboratory for Superconducting Materials (LNCMI-Grenoble) of the French National Center for Scientific Research, Pennsylvania State University, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Renmin University of China, Beihang University, as well as researchers from the Institute of Physics, CAS. Together, they exchanged the latest research progress in the field of quantum materials, discussed key areas for collaborative research leveraging the Integrated Extreme Conditions Experimental Facility, and provided opinions and suggestions for the construction and development of the joint center.

Dr. Cheng Jinguang, Deputy Director of the Institute of Physics and Chinese Principal of the Center, delivered the opening speech to welcome all participants. Following that, Professor Claudia Felser, Director of MPICPS, Vice President of the Max Planck Society, and Foreign Principal of the Center, expressed her gratitude in her speech. Researcher Liu Enke from the Institute of Physics hosted the launch and unveiling ceremony of the center, with both Chinese and foreign principals jointly unveiling the center's plaque. Twenty experts, including Professor Claudia Felser from MPICPS and Professor Stuart Parkin from the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, presented keynote reports on quantum materials research under extreme conditions. The participating experts and scholars engaged in lively discussions on frontier scientific issues related to quantum materials under extreme conditions, visited various experimental stations of the Integrated Extreme Conditions Experimental Facility, and provided high praise.

This workshop was jointly hosted by the Institute of Physics, CAS, and MPICPS. The conveners were Dr. Cheng Jinguang, Deputy Director of the Institute of Physics; Professor Claudia Felser, Director of MPICPS; and Researchers Liu Enke, Sun Peijie, and Zhou Rui from the Institute of Physics. The convening of this workshop was of guiding significance for the construction and development of the Sino-Foreign Joint Research Unit at the CAS Institute Level, namely the "Joint Research Center for Quantum Materials and Physics under Extreme Conditions." It also played a crucial role in promoting deeper and broader international cooperation relying on the Integrated Extreme Conditions Experimental Facility.
