The Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), a third-generation medium-energy synchrotron radiation facility, consists of one 150MeV electron linear accelerator, one full-energy booster, one 3.5GeV electron storage ring and beamlines. The SSRF project officially broke ground on December 25, 2004, was open to users since May 6, 2009, and successfully passed national acceptance in January, 2010.The construction of SSRF Phase II Beamline Project was started in 2016 and passed the national acceptance in 2024. The construction site is Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Pudong ,Shanghai. The legal entity of the project is Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics ,Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The facility is operated and managed by Shanghai Advanced Research Institute ,CAS.
The SSRF gives priority to original fundamental research ,applied fundamental research and technical innovation associated with major national needs. Users are welcomed to undertake major national research projects. Users from industry are also welcomed. SSRF operation and opening is user-oriented. It focuses on“Oriented to the world's frontier of science and technology ,oriented to the main battlefield of economy, oriented to major national needs ,and oriented to people's life and health“. It has defined scientific goals and identified key sectors which will be provided strong support for.
At present ,SSRF has 34 beamlines and 46 experimental stations open to users. The overall performance of SSRF is at the forefront of the third-generation medium-energy synchrotron radiation light sources in the world. An advanced photon scientific research center will take shape based on the SSRF in the future to support multidisciplinary leap-forward and innovation breakthroughs ,and incessantly satisfies relevant requirements of science and industrial development of our country ,thus making new contribution to enhancing the core competence of Chinese science and technology.
