SG-II-U High Power Laser Facility

May 27, 2025

The upgraded Shenguang-II (SG-II-U) facility commenced operation in 2016. After upgrading in2023, it achieved 16-beam laser output at the 10-kilojoule (kJ), marking dual milestones as China's first successfully developed 10-kJ-class laser facility and a critical achievement in domestic laser fusion experimental research. Serving as a technology demonstrator for fusion-scale devices in China, it has developed advanced technologies such as large-aperture plasma-electro-optic switches, 4+2 multipass off-axis amplification, and adaptive optics for active wavefront control. Its overall amplification architecture and core component technologies are comparable to those of the current US National Ignition Facility (NIF), representing equivalent technological advancement.
